Live music - Graham
Graham
Graham ('GC' to the rest of Wildhoney) started playing bass in 1976, having learned as a teenager which way round to hold a guitar. Rumour has it that six strings on a guitar were always too many for him to cope with, and when a friend loaned him a bass, he took to it straight away…and never returned the bass to its owner. The moral of this is of course never to lend anything to GC.

He learned piano from the age of 8, but gave up the lessons when he found that using his gift for picking up tunes without having to read the music was more fun that practising scales. He therefore has absolutely no musical qualifications, but boasts having passed his cycling proficiency test, and won a prize for woodwork at school. Undaunted by a lack of formal training, GC plays a full part in crafting Wildhoney's song arrangements. He still plays piano and synthesiser from time to time and enjoys arranging and composing music on the keyboard.

Having played with various musicians to different audiences over many years on an occasional basis, it wasn't until Graham joined Abba tribute band Bjorn Free in 2001 that he had the chance to play bass on a regular basis. He shared the desire to move forward with a band which was more rock-based and wasn't so limited by the 'tribute' label, so joined Ash and Helen in forming Indiana Blue, eventually to become Wildhoney. The rest, as they say, is history.

The senior member of the band, in age if not in experience, Graham has an alarming appetite for musical trivia and claims to be old enough to remember watching The Beatles and The Rolling Stones on television when they were first famous. GC provides a useful function in the life of Wildhoney by being the butt of everybody's ageist jokes.

His musical influences are numerous…and he says they're probably of little interest to anyone else… but after growing up on a diet of 70's glam and heavy rock in his teens, he's now most likely to be found listening to Springsteen, Aerosmith, or some vintage 60's soul.

As well as bass duties and occasional vocals, GC now handles most of the sound engineering side of Wildhoney, and so has become the person that everyone yells at when they can't hear what they're playing/singing. If the bass ever gets too heavy for him to carry, he'll no doubt be found behind the controls of his trusty mixing desk!
